Ninth grade science is a physical science class—basic physics and chemistry. The first half of the year is devoted to chemistry, the second to physics. Units for the first half the year include: nature of science; matter; properties of mater; structure of the atom; periodic table; chemical bonding; and chemical reactions. Topics for the second semester include: energy and energy transformations; motion; forces; waves; sound; and light.
A unifying theme of the course is that science is a PROCESS—a process of problem solving that can be used in our day-to-day lives. Students will find that there is more math used in physical science than in past years. We review the important mathematical skills and concepts before application. Connections to previous science classes as well as home applications are stressed.
My goal is to provide a science education that increases science literacy and prepares your son or daughter for future high school science classes. Whenever possible, we will “learn by doing,” discovering principles and relationships rather than just reading about them. |
