Mentor High Teacher Travels to the Ruins of Ancient Egypt

Last year, Mentor High world literature teacher Mrs. Geisler received the Martha Holden Jennings Teacher of the Year Award. As part of this award, Mrs. Geisler traveled to Egypt during the two week long winter break last December. During her stay, she visited the ruins of many temples and pyramids of ancient Egypt.

"You can tell a lot about a culture through the artifacts, stories, and carvings they have left behind, " Ms. Geisler commented as she related her experiences in Egypt.

After visiting several of the ancient Egyptian temples, Mrs. Geisler was surprised to find that their architecture was quite sophisticated. Just four years ago, scientists conducted a study on some of the temples in an attempt to explain why they have been able to survive the thousands of years of earthquakes which have hit that area of the world. These scientists discovered that the pillars of these temples rested in a succession of layers of granite and sand, which would help absorb the shock of a quake.

"Some of these temples were built in 3,000 BC and yet they display architectural skills our society has only just begun to use in the past century," mentioned Mrs. Geisler. "It makes you wonder what happened to that technology over the past thousand years and question some of the accepted views of progress."

As a result of the political climate in the area around Egypt, the group of tourists she was with spent the entire time under armed guard, and they were encouraged to avoid large public crowds. When asked about her feeling on this matter, she seemed disappointed that she was not able to spend more time among the natives. However, the trip took place during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and she had the privilege of witnessing the fasting and many festivals that occur during this time.
