High school football: Mentor roughs up Shaker Heights

n The key and the difference-maker: Before the start of Mentor’s game against visiting Shaker Heights, Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno and his staff made a decision to go with junior quarterback Sam Mayse as the starter the rest of the year, replacing senior Anthony Fracci. The result looks to be a promising one, as the Cardinals went on to rout the Red Raiders, 51-0. Mayse was brilliant in the passing game, and Fracci may have found a home as one of Mayse’s targets. Fracci hauled in three catches for 122 yards, including a 71-yard scoring strike on the Cardinals’ second play of the second quarter, which extended Mentor’s lead to 21-0. Mayse jumped all over Shaker early by hitting Mike Johanek for a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes that made it 13-0. Running back Tom Worden took a direct snap from center and punched in a 2-yard TD run with two minutes remaining in the first half and the Cardinals lead 28-0 at the break.
The second half opened with a 29-yard field goal for Mentor, followed by a Ricky Hanslik 6-yard TD run making it 37-0. The Cardinals responded with a tremendous defensive effort as they controlled the line of scrimmage all night and continually made sure the athletic Red Raiders didn’t establish any momentum with their big-play possibilities. The Mentor defense held Shaker Heights to 122 total yards and the big lead enabled Mentor to rest some of its starters.
