Science Olympiad to Represent Mentor and Ohio at Nationals
|
This year's Science Olympiad Team made school history. Every year since the 80's a Mentor Team has made it to states, finishing 3rd the last 3 years in a row. This year's team beat out an outstanding team from Solon for the number 2 spot in the state and along with Centerville will represent Ohio at Nationals May 17-19. Solon had made it to Nationals 14 years in a row.
Science Olympiad is highly competitive in Ohio with over 260 schools participating. Mentor finished 1st in Physics, Forensics and Music. In fact Mentor earned medals in 16 of the 23 regular events and all 3 trial events.
The team is lead by senior captains Bill Janesh and Mary Mismas. Other Seniors on the National team include Mike Butke, Rob Fraser,Bill Janesh, Sam Johnson, Cory Kunkel, Mary Mismas, Sam Petite, Marvin Schulz and Christina Zielke. Juniors are: Mark Noviski, Andrew Ring, Kristina Vaci, Alison Bennett, Mike Paige. Sophomores are: Abby Erinc, Tiffany Terdan, Cameron Tuckerman, Justin Ford, Alyssa Harker, Tony Vehovec, Prashant Rajan and Laura Gliebe.
To prepare the team has worked with over 20 scientists and
engineers from Mentor and the Cleveland area. Some have been parents,
others have been community members generous with their time. Study
groups have met privately with curators of the collections at the Cleveland Museum of Natural
History and the head of epidemiology at the Cleveland Clinic.
This
made for a wonderful season in which the team won 2 of its 6 invites
outright and the regional qualifier at Case. Now its off to Nationals in
Wichita, Kansas where the team will represent both Mentor and the State.
Thanks to those corporations that have supported the team: Avery Dennison, Steris, Mentor Technical Services,USB Corp, PCC Airfoils, Lubrizol and Lake National Bank.
