Colonel's Scholars program will honor more than 50 graduating seniors who share that spirit and need help affording college.



Criteria:



1. Must be a graduating senior planning to enroll in a PUBLIC (state-funded) college/university in your state of legal residence in fall 2012

2. Minimum 2.75 gpa

3. Pursuing a bachelor degree

4. U.S. citizen or permanent resident

The Plain Dealer "Senior Standouts"2012-02-10

The Plain Dealer will be publishing their annual "Senior Standouts" section in May. Mentor High school may select 1 senior to be entered into this nomination process. The Plain Dealer will select 10 students this year as "Senior Standouts". Each will be profiled in stories and each will receive a $250 scholarship. They are looking for well-rounded seniors whose efforts have made them exemplary. Excellence in academics, school activities and involvement in the community is the baseline.



If you would like to be considered for this process, complete this application and return it to A-113 by Feb. 10. The MHS nominee will be chosen from the applicants.

The Hope & Stanley Adelstein Speech Essay Competition2012-02-10

The City Club of Cleveland is sponsoring this essay competition. They will award 3 prizes of $1,000, $750 and $500 each. The teachers of the top 3 winners will receive $250. Twenty finalists will also be chosen. The finalists and guests will be invited to attend a City Club luncheon.



Criteria:

1. Must be a senior residing in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Portage, Lake, Lorain, Medina or Summit County.

2. Must submit an essay on the topic, "What The Freedom of Speech of the U.S. Constitution means to me", maximum 300 words.

3. Include a cover letter that states, "This is my original document and does not include any previous composition by another." Statement must be signed by the applicant.

Ohio University Women's Club Scholarship (females only)2012-02-13

The Ohio University Women

National Co-Op Scholarship Program2012-02-13

The National Commission for Cooperative Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing high quality, college-level cooperative education, is offering 170 merit co-op scholarships totaling $4.2 million to students who are planning to participate in college cooperative education. Students must apply and be accepted for the 2011-12 academic year at one or more of the ten NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities: University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, Drexel University, Johnson & Wales, Kettering University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Wentworth Institute of Technology.



CRITERIA:



1. GPA of 3.5 or better

2. Essay describing "Why you have chosen to pursue a college cooperative education program".

3. Must apply and be accepted for 2012-13 at one or more of the colleges/universities mentioned above.

4. No transcript or recommendation letters are required.

National Television Academy2012-02-15

The Cleveland Chapter of the National Television Academy is offering two $2,000 scholarships to graduating seniors planning to attend a four-year college.



CRITERIA:



1. Planning to attend a four-year college and pursue a career in television or areas related to television broadcasting



2. Essay that describes your interest in communication and broadcasting, how you became interested in the field and what you see yourself doing ten years from now in the communications field.

Cargill Community Scholalrship Program2012-02-15

The Cargill Community Scholarship Program is for U.S. high school seniors in Cargill communities planning to pursue a two- or four-year degree in any major. Applicants must visit their local Cargill facility or subsidiary and obtain a signature from a Cargill manager on their application. This program awards 350-$1,000 non-renewable scholarships each year. Applications are available beginning in December on the website www.cargill.com. Questions? Big 33 Scholarship2012-02-17

As a Mentor High students, you are eligible to apply for the Waste Management scholarship through the Big 33 Scholarship Program. The scholarship will be a one-time award of $1,000



All entries must be submitted online at: www.big33.org



You will need the following information in order to complete the application online:

- Your personal and contact information; including email address

- Parental/guardian information including income

- List of clubs, extracurricular activities and community/volunteer activities you participated in during your senior year



- List of work/employee experience during your senior year

- List of awards, honors or special recognition/achievement during high school



Essay:

In 600 words or less, write an essay in Microsoft Word describing why you deserve a Big 33 Scholarship. Direct your comments toward your motivation, need, both financial or otherwise, leadership and academic accomplishments. Describe special talents and special, creative or challenging activities that you have initiated or obstacles you have overcome to achieve your goals. Essays cannot exceed 600 words.



Font size must be 12 point and the essays must be 1.5 spaced.



You can use your computer to compose your essay and then copy and paste your work into the box shown on that page of the application.





After you submit your essay, Mr. Litzinger will receive notification and then he will submit your ACT/SAT scores.

Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce - Don-Mar Krueger2012-02-17

The Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce will award a minimum of two academic $1,000 scholarships to a Mentor City senior high school student OR a student of a Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce member company.

MENTOR HIGH DEADLINE: 2/18/12

Computer Programming Contest2012-02-17

Is computing in your future? Can you write in Visual BASIC, C++, Java or another high-level programming language? If so, you can enter this contest and possibly win a prize of $50, $100, $150 or $300. Entrants do not have to be applying to Gannon Univ. to be eligible.



Criteria:

1. Students may enter contest as individuals or as a team. All participants must have a Sponsoring Teacher.

2. Entries can be written in any programming language as long as they are executable on a PC running LINUX or Windows operating system.

3. Games are acceptable.

4. Entries must be accompanied by a description of the problem the program is intended to solve, instruction of program installation and operating instructions.

5. Refer to www.gannon.edu/programcontest for specific details.

6. Registration opens on Jan. 4, 2012 and the final project submission deadline is Feb. 17, 2012.

GE-Reagam Foundation Scholarship Program2012-02-17

Honoring the legacy and character of our nation's 40th President, the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program rewards college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship with financial assistance to pursue higher educations. Each year, roughly 20 Scholars will receive a $10,000 scholarship which is renewable for an additional 3 years.



Criteria:

1. Student must demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship at school, home and community

2. Must be nominated by an eligible community leader (principal, elected official,etc). Check website for specifics on nomination process.)

3. Must be recommended by an authority figure (counselor, teacher, religious leader, etc)

4. Must have minimum 3.0 gpa

5. Must have demonstrated financial need

6. Must be a U.S. citizen.

7. Must be graduating in spring 2012 and planning to enter college in fall 2012. Scholarship funds are to be used for tuition, room/board.

Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland Creative Writing Contest2012-02-22

The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland is sponsoring the "Economics on TV?"creative writing contest. Students are asked to write an essay, play, short story or poem based on this topic. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each category: essays and poems/short stories/plays. 1st place prize is a $500 savings bond, 2nd prize is a $250 savings bond, 3-runners-up prizes of $100 savings bonds and 5 semifinalists will receive a $50 savings bond.



Criteria:



1. Must be a current junior or senior

2. Students may submit one composition of 1-3 pages in the form of an essay, short story, poem or play.

3. Students must pick a TV show or episode and investigate the scenes to find the basic economic concepts within. Then write an essay, poem, play or other short story explaining how the show demonstrates some of these concepts. (see application for more specific details)

4. Must be under the supervision and direction of a teacher

5. Two copies of your writing must be submitted

MHS DEADLINE: 2/22/12



Cardinal Community Credit Union2012-02-23

The Cardinal Community Credit Union will award EIGHT $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors from their service area at the credit union's Annual Meeting which will be held at the end of March.



CRITERIA:

1. Parents or applicant must be member of Cardinal Community Credit Union as of 12/31/11.

2. Must be a senior and have completed two (2) years at the school they are attending

3. Must have a 3.0 or above GPA after six semesters and a certified grade transcript

4. A letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or administrator who can report your abilities regarding your chosen field of study. For example, a prospective engineer might use a recommendation from a math or science teacher.

5. Must include an essay (up to 250 words) on: What do you think CCCU can do to reach out to young adults? Discuss what you would like to see in terms of financial education. What products and services are relevant to your lifestyle?

6 Must be applying to any accredited post-secondary educational program.

7. Finalists may be requested to appear before the scholarship committee for an interview.

8. Applications must be received at the CCCU by Feb. 28, 2012 5:00pm. The deadline to return to the MHS Guidance Office for us to mail is Feb. 23.

MENTOR HIGH DEADLINE: 2/23/12

Jack and Shirley Berger Scholarship2012-02-24

This scholarship was established to assist and encourage students to achieve academic excellence in secular education. It is hoped that the recipients will be encouraged to further the humanitarian principles and ideals to which Mr. and Mrs. Berger have been dedicated. They will award $2,000/year with a maximum of $8,000 providing the student maintains a 3.0 gpa each year and completing required courses.



Criteria:



1. Must be a resident of Cuyahoga County or its contiguous counties.

2. Must have minimum 3.5 gpa

3. Minimum 1850 SAT and/or 28 ACT

4. They prefer that the applicant be planning to attend an Ohio state-supported college, but there will be no restriction on choice of school other than it be for a secular education.

5. To qualify for the scholarship the student must agree to take a college course in Comparative Religion or if the school does not offer that, the second choice would be World Philosophy or World Literature.

6. There are no restrictions in regard to age, race, ethnic origin, sex of religion.

7. Financial need is a consideration. FAFSA forms and parents 2011 tax forms must be included.





MHS DEADLINE: 2/24/12

Yoda-Newton "Share the Luv" Scholarship2012-02-24

This scholarship was established in 2006 to help students who have faced adversity or have taken the initiative to volunteer their time to help others in need. They will award 4-$2,000 renewable scholarships for a maximum of $8,000. Student must maintain full-time status, 3.0 gpa and stay on track to graduate in four years in a bachelor degree program. 3. May have faced adversity

Ohio PTA Academic 4-Year College Scholarship2012-02-24

The Ohio PTA is awarding three different $500 scholarships to Ohio Seniors. One is for a student planning to attend a four-year college, one is for a student planning to attend a two-year college or technical school and one is for a special education student planning to further his/her education. The Ohio PTA is awarding a $500 scholarship to a senior planning to obtain an associate degree or technical degree.

Kent State University Wick Poetry Competition2012-02-24

The Wick Poetry Center at Kent State will award three scholarships: 1st place $3,000, 2nd Place $2,000, 3rd Place $1,000. These tuition scholarships are renewable up to four years pending continued academic standing.

CRITERIA:

1. Must be a senior

2. Applicants must submit one original and unpublished poem, typed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Four copies should also be sent. Poems should be no more than 100 lines long.

3. Poet's name should not appear on the poem. Must include a cover sheet listing poet's name, address, email, phone number. Name, address and signature of guidance counselor or sponsoring teacher is also required.

4. Entries will be recycled after the winner has been chosen.

5. Must be enrolling as a full-time student at Kent.

Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers2012-02-27

The Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers will award three $1,000 scholarships to Ohio high school seniors.



CRITERIA:



1. At least a 2.5 grade point average

2. Plan to attend an accredited 4-year college in the 2012-13 academic year

3. Essay two-page (maximum) TYPED on the topic: "Should the police be allowed to search an individual's cell phone, including text message and emails, without a warrant? Discuss what limitations, if any, there should be and why."

Buick Achievers2012-02-29

Buick will be awarding 1,000 scholarships in the amount of $2,000 (renewable for 4 years) and 100 scholarships in the amount of $25,000 per year (renewable for 4 years). Scholarships can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, required equipment, room/board, etc.



Criteria:



1. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, participation in community/school activities, work experience.

2. Unusual circumstances will also be considered.

3. Applicants must be planning to major in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and work in the automotive or related industry.

The mission of BioOhio is to accelerate bioscience discovery, innovation, and commercialization of global value, driving economic growth and improved quality of life in Ohio. Sunflower Initiative (applicant must be female)2012-03-12

The Sunflower Initiative was formed by a group of alumnae of Randolph-Macon Woman's College for the purpose of supporting women attending women's colleges. (Applicant does not have to attend Randolph-Macon College.) They will award a $10,000 scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year.



Criteria:

1. Must be a female graduating in 2012.

2. Must be planning to enroll in a women's college in the fall of 2012.

3. Must be academically motivated

4. Must possess a stellar high school record

5. Must provide strong references

6. Must have a desire to contribute to society.

Mentor Woman's Club Scholarship2012-03-14

Mentor Woman's Club will award one scholarship to Mentor area senior planning to obtain educational training beyond high school. Applicant does not have to be a female. One or more scholarships will be awarded in amounts up to $1,000.



Criteria:

1. Upper third of class

2. Service

3. Character

4. Leadership

5. Financial need

6. Two Recommendations: One from a teacher or counselor and one from a school administrator, religious or community leader who is not a relative.

7. Autobiographical essay (500 words)

8. Statement stating why Mentor Woman's Club should award a scholarship to you.

Mentor Teachers Association - General Scholarship2012-03-23



The Mentor Teachers Association will award up to $1,500 to a Mentor High senior planning to attend college or the award may be divided among candidates at the discretion of the committee.



CRITERIA:



1. At least a 3.0 gpa

2. Must have completed at least two years at Mentor High

3. Recommendations from two high school teachers from different subject areas. One of these must be of a subject related to the applicant's educational goal.

Mentor Teachers Association - Education Majors Scholarship2012-03-23

The Mentor Teachers Association will award up to $1,000 to a graduating senior who plans to major in education or the award may be divided among candidates at the discretion of the committee.



CRITERIA:



1. Plan to major in education

2. At least a 3.0 gpa

3. Must have completed at least two years at Mentor High

4. Recommendations from two high school teachers from different subject areas. Recommendation should speak to likelihood of success in the teaching profession.

Mentor Teachers Association - Tom Davidson Memorial Scholarship2012-03-23

Career Tech seniors are eligible to apply to for this scholarship. You can request an application from your Career Tech teacher or Mrs. Cerjan. Mrs. Cerjan is located in the Career Tech office.

Mentor High School PTSA2012-03-23

The Mentor High School PTSA will award FOUR -- $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who are members of the MHS PTSA or whose parent is a member.



CRITERIA:

1. Must use for any educational training beyond high school (4-year college, 2-year college, trade or technical school)

2. Applicant and/or applicant's parent must be a member of the MHS PTSA.

4. One-page essay about an experience, situation or individual during high school that helped to shape you and your choices as an individual.

Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools2012-03-26

The Ohio Council of Private Colleges and Schools will award 23 one-half tuition, 9 full-tuition and 81 specific amount scholarships through Ohio's career colleges and schools.



CRITERIA:

1. Plan to attend an Association member school. These are a few examples of Association schools: ETI, ITT Technical Institute, Cleveland Institute of Dental/Medical, Ohio Institute of Photography. See application for complete list.

2. At least a "C" average

3. Applicants are eligible to apply for not more than 3 scholarships and must use a separate application form for each.

3. Two letters of recommendation and transcript

4. Statement 250 words on why you want a career in this field

5. Nomination form must be sent to your State Representative or State Senator. He/she will then return the signed form to you to include with your application. This process is explained in the application.

The Lake County Medical Alliance will award scholarships to high school seniors. Last year, they awarded 9 $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors.



CRITERIA:



1. Plan to pursue a health-related field

2. Areas of interest: pharmacy, speech and hearing, physical therapy, nursing, medical technology, physician assistant, radiologic technology, nutrition, respiratory therapy, to name a few. (Excludes pre-med, psychology, dental health and veterinary health)

The Vincent L. Petro Memorial Scholarship will award a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Mentor High School who resides in Lake County.



Criteria:



1. Minimum 2.5 gpa

2. Planning to enroll in an accredited 2 or 4-year college/university or an accredited vocational/technical school.

3. Must include copy of SAR from the FAFSA including the pages listing the Expected Family Contribution.

4. Two letters of recommendation. One from a teacher and one from a community member who is not a relative.

5. Transcript

6. Scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need, academics, community service and extra-curricular activities.





MHS DEADLINE: 3/28/12

Northern Ohio Girls Soccer League2012-03-30

The NOGSL will award 4-$2,000 scholarships to former youth soccer players (members). The scholarship will be divided evenly over a period of 4 succeeding years at $500/year.



Criteria:



1. Must be a graduating high school senior in 2012 and planning to attend a 4-year college/university or 2-year technical school in fall of 2012.

2. Must have participated at least 3 full seasons on a NOGSL registered team. (Must have played with Mentor Soccer Club traveling team.)

3. Participation in high school soccer is NOT a requirement.

4. 250 word essay.

William D. Squires Scholarship2012-04-02

The William D. Squires Educational Foundation will award 15 renewable scholarships valued at $3,000 to college-bound seniors planning to attend a two-year or four-year college. This award is based primarily on financial need (EFC less than $8,000)

The Paul Brandt ESCO-Cleveland will award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from Lake or Geauga County who intends to pursue an Engineering degree in an accredited 4-year college/university. One renewal of $1,000 will be given if student maintains a 2.5 gps for their freshman year.



Criteria:



1. Minimum 3.0 gpa

2. Must be intending to pursue an Engineering degree in an accredited 4-year college/university.

4. Must include copy of the SAR from the FAFSA including the page listing the Expected Family Contribution.

5. Two letters of recommendation from non-relatives.

6. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their determination to complete goals, academics, extra-curriculars, community service and financial assessment of student's family.

Quota International of Lake County will award a $1,000 scholarship to a Lake County college bound student.



CRITERIA:



1. Plan to study speech, hearing, visually impaired, social work, counseling, physical therapy, or elementary or secondary education.

2. It is the intent that the recipient work within Lake County for at least one year after graduation.

Cleveland State Universit-Freshman Scholars2012-05-01

CSU will offer a $3,000 Merit Award that is renewable up to $12,000 over four years. In addition, if students choose to live on campus in Euclid Commons or Fenn Tower residence halls, they will receive an additional $2,000 award that is renewable up to $8,000 over four years. These scholarships are automatically awarded to qualified students, no application is necessary



Criteria:

1. Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 gpa and a minimum ACT of 23 or SAT of 1070.

Nova Films & Foils is a manufacturing corporation in Bedford, Ohio. They will award renewable scholarships in amounts between $500 and $1,500. Awards will be made directly to the school to cover academic expenses.

The Americans of Italian Heritage will award four scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each for graduating seniors.



CRITERIA:



1. Residents of Lake, Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga counties

2. At least one parent of applicant must be of Italian descent

3. Must plan to attend either a 2 or 4-year college/university as full time student

4. Scholarships will be awarded within three categories: 1) gpa of 2.5 to 2.99, 2) gpa of 3.0 to 3.5, 3) gpa of above 3.5

Lakeland Community College Biotechnology Scholarship2012-06-01

This scholarship is designed to assist students interested in a career in the field of biotechnology including high caliber lab work. It will be awarded for two years and will cover the cost of tuition and fees up to $8,100. Scholarships will be awarded until all money is exhausted. All applicants not receiving this award will be considered for any additional funds or new scholarships that become available during the year. It is to the student's advantage to apply as soon as possible. Lakeland's program has over a 90% placement rate into biotech jobs or straight into a bachelor degree program.



Criteria:

1. Must have a 3.0 or better gpa

2. Applicants may not qualify for more than $500 through state or federal grants

3. Applicants must have completed or be enrolled in the following high school courses: Biology, Chemistry and Algebra II (or their equivalent).

4. Recipients must enroll at Lakeland in the Bioscience Technology program for fall 2012 and maintain a minimum 3.0 gpa.
