I would like to share some thoughts and frustrations as a divorced mother. I have found out recently that it is a rather common occurrence that when a divorced father gets remarried or seriously involved again - that the former wife and children from former marriage are crippled with requests to reduce child support. Not only is it happening to me - it also happened to several people in my life, i.e several of my friends and my sister. I have no problem with ex-husbands moving on with their lives. But how do they sleep at night attempting to take food out of their own children's mouths? Just because (in many cases) dad doesn't live with the kids anymore; and sees them a whole lot less - why should they have to adjust or reduce there life styles (meaning the children)? The parents got divorced - the kids didn't. Also, how can my ex ask to pay less, when he has purchased a new home, new truck, new motorcycle, purebred dog, wide-screen TV's, etc (all post divorce)? How can he honestly say he is making less money; while he spends-spends-spends!?! I don't begrudge people working hard and enjoying the "fruits of their labor" - but lets not forget the "fruits of your loins" dad. I am a hard working person, brought up in middle-class, blue collar home. When I got separated 2 1/2 years ago I found a new job, to better my income. A year later I did it again. I am good citzen, I pay my taxes and my bills and strive to set a good example for my children. Since the departure of my husband I have cleaned up my credit report and have worked hard to have my home some place my kids will be proud of. It is my hope and prayer that justice will also prevail in Lake County Common Pleas Court.

My fellow Mentor High Alumni and current students much has happened since my class of 1984...I have traveled far...from the Great Wall of China I have watched the wall wind into the mountains and disappear into the horizon. I prayed for the last emperor at the Forbidden City. I have bowed my head at both Nagasaki and Hiroshima for all who suffered. I smelled the flowers that now grow from Pit 1 and 2 at Tinian where both bombs were loaded. I have overlooked the battlefields of Saipan and Okinawa and rendered a salute in their honor. I have loved and lost, I have been to War and back, I have saved a strangers life, I have almost lost my own, I have three loving children, I have succeeded, I have failed, I have known fellow brothers at arms to never return from routine missions, I have been reunited with friends I thought I'd never see again... It is through my travels that I have watched America from afar and have recalled the simple life of Mentor, where David Seitz introduced me to David Bowie and sadly his death introduced me to the dangers and reality of reckless youth...I know he is still remembered by many... In Mentor there were countless experiences that shaped the man that I am today and I cherish them all. The reason I reach back to you all now is because of an uncertain future and unforeseen events from 9/11 that do not guarantee that I will be able to drive through the Kirtland Hills during Autumn, Jump from the light house at Headlands beach, or even wander through the Great Lakes Mall...life's simple pleasures. It is so important to savor the moment in your high school youth but even more important it is my hope and request that you all help someone in need savor the simple pleasures of life...be compassionate but also be careful...do so from the multilateral spirit of the United Nations and cross your own self erected boundaries of peer groups, stereotypes, clubs, races, and youth. For my worries is not that we will defeat terrorism, we will, but that we will lose countless lives abroad fighting for freedom while petty things like bullies picking on the weak, popular picking on the shy, beautiful calling others ugly, drugs and alcohol being abused to hide from reality, and all the pain that youth and lack of compassion can often bring. Defend freedom in your own way by being kind to one another - the Catholics, the Muslims, the "druggies", the "Jocks" and anyone else who may need to be reminded that being American stands for something and in all the countries that I have been in and all the wondrous things I have experienced there is no greater country. There are no greater people. I guarantee it.
