The person/people making this site should add that there is a Battle of the Bands at Mentor High February 14th under the calendar and wherever else so that there are more particapants to it.

I had Mr. Korcheck for the 1992/93 school year. I was home to Mentor for Thanksgiving and read the obituary in the newspaper. I was saddened to hear that such a great man had passed away. I used to run into him walking his dog in my family's neighborhood. Maybe these stories have already been told, but I have two very fond memories. . . the first is that he told us everyone knows the derivative of 'e to the x.' It is just 'e to the x.' So, if you ask someone, "What's the derivative of e to the x, and they say, 'E TO THE X?!?' then they're right on!" He brought the janitor into the classroom and asked him, but it didn't work. . . The other story is how to remember the first digits of 'e.' He said you just needed to remember that it started with a 2. Then, he told us he had a picture of Andrew Jackson, the 7th president (2.7). He was elected in 1828 and served two terms (2.718281828). The picture fell on the ground and split to make a 45/90/45 triangle. So, 'e' is 2.718281828459045 !!!!! And, I still remember.

I was in shock when I found out about Mr. Korchek. I had just been studying Calc II in the basement of the dorm, and I simply couldn't believe it. The golden C, the hand calculator... and perhaps my favorite memory of Mr. Korchek was the day we first began integrals: he suddenly stood on top of the desk in the front of the room and shouted at us "Two four six eight we don't wanna integrate!"
Mr. Korchek was one of the finest men and teachers I have ever had the fortune of meeting. He will always be remembered.

Mr. Korcheck was by far one of the finest teachers I have ever encountered during my lifetime educational experience. It was such a shock to find out his death, ocurring just over six months after I saw him every day in the classroom. Mr. Korcheck's calculus class was, by far, the high point of my senior year. His amazing humor, witty comments (i.e. making fun of Mr. Ramsey), and incredible teaching skills made it a joy to sit in his classroom. He made a personal connection with almost every student in my class. Some things about him, however, I will never understand, and will remain mysteries. I still want to know how he calculated the natural log of .02 with his hand-calculator--how did the hand calculator work, anyhow? Why does the metric system not apply to calculus? Why do you threaten to dock us points if we write dd/dt in a related rates problem? Around this time each year, he would sing his calculus carols...our class's favorite was "the happy wanderer". I'm sure this verse applies to Mr. Korcheck: "I dreamed I saw the Promised Land, That big screen in the sky, A graph of God said "Join me and your batteries won't die" we all miss you Mr. Korcheck...

Just checking out your schools web site from here in IND. My niece is a soph there and is on the Bball team. I try to keep up with her sports on the net and this is about the best place. None of the news sites that I have found do a real good job. If anyone knows a site where I could get scores and the box scores for the girls sports I would love to hear from you. Thanks in advance. Lee

Mr. Korcheck was a fine teacher and mentor. I can still see him calculating things faster on his hand than me on my calculator.

Mr. Korcheck was my Algebra trig teacher in 1974. He started class every day with a quiz. He inspired me, teased me, to really try and after a while, I was determined to have the highest quiz score of anyone for the year. I wanted to show him that I could do it and I did Funny the things in life that you don't forget. I will always remember his smile, and humor. A great man who inspired me to work hard in life. Mr. Korcheck, I will never forget you. Reyn Leutz

I would like those who have written comments about Mr. Korcheck that the family does read and appreciate them. I attended the memorial Mass. 3 different family members told me they had read the comments.

I could not believe what I was hearing when they announced Monday that Mr. Korcheck passed away. He was one of the best teachers I have ever had. His class was always interesting and funny, due to his wonderful and unique personality. Mr. Korcheck's sense of humor was always evident, whether it was when he said "Holy buckets!", "Holy bananas!", or when he complained about the annoying dogs that he loved so much. On multiple ocassions, when the answer to a problem came out to a high number, (70's, 80's, or 90's), he would quickly say something like "And there's our answer, also my age." The sad thing is that Mr. Korcheck was young, he just turned 60. It was the little, snappy comments like that that made me love his class. Besides all that, he was just a good teacher. He wanted everyone to learn and understand the material. Whenever we had questions, they were answered, which is more than I can say for many of my former math teachers. I hope Mr. Korcheck knows how he is missed, and knows of the positive impacts he had on so many lives. P.S. to Mr. Korcheck: You still owe everyone an explanation to the chocolate pudding story!

As I talked with other MHS alums over thanksgiving break, we were all shocked by the news about Mr. Korcheck. I will always remember calculus as one of my favorite classes from my years at Mentor. Mr. Korcheck was one of those amazing teachers that made a connection with students through his enthusiastic teaching style and caring, approachable nature. I remember the way he let us hide in his classroom so we could do calculus homework instead of going to the pep assemblies :) Thanks to Mr. Korcheck, this gal never forgets her constant of integration!

Our deepest sympathies to the Korcheck family. Mr. Korcheck was by far, everyone's favorite back in my day (the early 90's), as I'm sure he was in the years before and long after. My heartfelt prayers go to his daughters (who happen to be fellow Brentmoor Bulldog alumni as well). God be with you. Your father left a great legacy with everyone who ever had the privilege to learn from him.

I am sorry that I missed the funeral service for Mr. Korcheck. I was at home just being with my family. I think that Mr. Korcheck, my former Calculus teacher, would have approved of that excuse seeing as that is all he would have liked to do during his all too short retirement. Mr. Korcheck, you were a pleasure as a teacher when I was a student and an inspiration as a colleague once I became a teacher. Thanks for opening up the computer lab for me so often in the morning! Hope some doors opened for you this week without any alarms going off. : ) Holy hannah! Steve Couch

I attended Mr. Korchek's calculus class in 1987/88 as an exchange student in Mentor High. He made the subject interesting for me eventhough I had taken it in my home country before coming to Ohio. He will always be remembered as a kind and great teacher, and my sincere condolences to his family and friends.
