Ecology Club '03-'04
Ecology
Club is open to all environmentally friendly, nature loving students here
at Mentor High. Our purpose is to spread environmental awareness and to conduct
our various programs which benefit the planet and all its inhabitants. We're
trying to make the world, starting here in Mentor, a better, cleaner, kinder
place. This year we are trying to reform Mentor High Schools recycling system.
We are going to try to covince more teachers to have recycling bins for paper
and start a system for recycling plastics in the student center. Ecology club
also wants to try to start Ecology Clubs in the junior highs. Everyone's participation,
whether you're in the club or not, is always greatly appreciated.
On October 23rd the Ecology Club met with Bruce Hiller and Mark Thompson from Waste Management. In order to find options on diffierent ways to recycle Mentor High's plastics, tin, and aluminum. Ecology club is now aware of some options and must start research so they can convince the school board to adopt a system for recycling plactics.
On January 22th Ecology Club placed a collection box for empty printer carterages in the Wal-mart on Mentror Avenue. The carterages we collect from the community will be recycled and proceeds will go towards Mentor High. We are very thankful that Wal-mart has allowed us to collect carterages at their store.
On April 8th sophmores Joe Ferrato, Jena kaleallom, Ryan Borgman, Jessalyn Tarbill, Carmyn Dryer, Sara Brett, Amanda Morin, Nisha Ramnath, and Lindsey Glinka participated in Mentor clean up. These amazing students went out in the rain and picked up trash from around Mentor High during the pep assembly. Well some of the odd things we found were:
The Ecology club is thinking of having trash clean up as a monthly activity.
If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, etc. please speak with Mr. McLaughin or an Ecology Club member. Our meetings are after school on Thursdays in C-25 . They are relativly short and we discuss our plans for our projects.
Don't forget: Wherever you go . . . there you are.
"You must be the change that you wish to see in the world."
