November 13, 2011: CARDINAL COMET REMATCH
The Mentor Cardinals took on the Solon Comets in a rematch of
their earlier season game ... and we witnessed a wild one. The Cards won the game 42-40 to advance to the Regional
Final next week against St. Ignatius. But back to the game ... where the Cards started scoring when Mitch Trubisky
hit Cameron Kavan for a 3 yard TD. Trubisky then hit Jeff Foreman on a 14 yard strike for his second TD toss on the
night giving the Cards a 14-7 lead after the 1st quarter. Mentor scored the next 3 scores on a Trubisky 62 yard TD
run, another Trubisky 25 yard TD run, and then his throw to Kavan for 29 yards which gave the Cards a 35-7 lead.
Thinking we had a comfortable lead? Well, there was a lot of football to play and Solon took advantage of Mentor
mistakes to convert the next 3 scores cutting the lead to 35-28. The Cards answered back on Kavan's 3rd TD
reception (Trubisky's 4th TD pass) for 16 yards taking the score to 42-28. Solon needed just 13 seconds to score on
an 80 yard TD run but the point after was blocked! Therefore, the Cards held a 42-34 lead with just over 10 minutes
left in the game. Solon made it interesting with their final TD with 5:15 left in the game but the 2 point
conversion failed giving the Cards a 42-40 lead. Mentor's (11-1) defense held firm on Solon's (10-2) final drive to
give the Cards the win. Whew ... that was close :-) Everyone's heart ok? So the Regional Final is set for
another season rematch with Mentor taking on St. Ignatius on Saturday, November 19th. Stay tuned for the game
location and plan to join us. GO CARDS!
