Yearbook

Attention seniors: If you have not had your senior pictures taken and would still like to be featured in the 2018 yearbook, you can have your picture taken with MK photography next Thursday, October 26 free of cost.

Ski/Board Club

The leaves are falling and you know what that means?!? Before we know it there will be snow on the ground! Whether you are a die-hard skier or snowboarder who is anxiously awaiting the first big blast of cold weather or just a teenager who loves winter because of the snow days, Mentor High Schools Ski and Snowboard Club has something to offer you. Signup information will be available beginning NEXT week. Come either MONDAY(oct 23) after school at 2:30 or TUESDAY(Oct 24) before school at 7:00 to a short informational meeting in room C-203 to find out how YOU can start enjoying the best of winter. There are lessons available so it is okay if you have absolutely no experience! Returning members: Please note this meeting is MANDATORY as there ARE some changes for this years season that you need to know about. I promise it will be short and you will leave with your registration packet. K pop club today after school in B 100. All are welcome.

Inkwell

Inkwell! The inkwell will meet on Wednesday, October 18th after school in room F107. Want to learn more about the school's on-line newspaper? Then join us Wednesday afternoon in room F107 right after school.

Cooking Club

October is muffin month. Cooking club will meet next Tuesday, Oct. 24th to make and exchange muffins. Sign up in room D-105 if you are attending. Hope to see you there.

Math League

It's finally here! The official start to the Ohio Math League competition is tomorrow, Tuesday, October 17. That means we want YOU to come to C203 after school to help us earn back our regional championship title as we compete against other schools in the state of Ohio! You bring a calculator and problem solving skills; we bring the snacks! If you have not yet made it to a Math League meeting now is the time to join the fun dont delay another week!

K Pop Club will meet tomorrow(Tuesday) in B 100 at 2:30. Come join us for an hour of Korean Pop Music and friends.

Fishing Club will be meeting at Veteran's Park for the first tournament. We will meet under the pavilion at 3:30 on Thursday October 5th. Please contact Mr. Nemunaitis in A115 (Unit 11 office) if you have any questions.

Mentor Theatre

Mentor Theatre is presenting their first show, Love Letters, this Thursday and Friday in A-Lecture at 7 p.m. This two-person show follows the experiences of two friends through the letters they exchanged throughout their lifetime. Tickets are available at the door for $5 for students and $7 for adults.

Pride

Snacks and drinks provided. PRIDE (Mentor High's Gay-Straight Alliance) will have a "social meeting" the last Wednesday of each Month (beginning September 27). We will be in A-lecture hall from 2:30 - 3:30. Everybody is welcome. Come check us out! See Miss Gomori or Mr. Montgomery in unit 12 with questions.

KPOP

Are you interested in Korean Pop Music? Do you like to listen to or dance to K pop? Come make new friends and join the K POP family on Tuesday October 3 at 2:30 in room B 100.

Cooking Club

Web Team

Students interested in computers are invited to join the MHS webteam to work on the Mentor High website and its servers. All skill levels are welcome. Brief Meeting in I-103 next Friday Sept 29 or see Mr. Ramsey in I-103. And yes there is a google form.

Speech and Debate Team

The first meeting of the Speech and Debate Team will be Tuesday, September 26th at 2:30pm in B201. If you can't make it but are interested in joining, see Ms. Roediger or Mr. Rotar for more details.

GAHTAH

VINTAGE HOLLYWOOD HOMECOMING DANCE (Sponsored by MHS PTSA): Mentor High Schools Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Tickets will be on sale starting Friday, September 22nd through Friday, September 29th. Tickets will be sold before school and during all lunch mods. Dont forget if you are bringing a guest that does not attend MHS, please have your guest complete a Guest Form which can be picked up in all of the guidance counselors offices. This Guest Form must be completed before Homecoming tickets can be purchased for a guest.

Student Government

In light of the horrific hurricanes that occurred this past month in both Texas and Florida, both Homecoming Committee and Student Government would like to help raise funds to donate to the victims. We will be selling Hollywood Walk of Fame Stars in the student center from Tuesday the 19th to Tuesday the 26th. Come write down a star in your life while helping out a great cause. These stars will be on display during the homecoming dance. The cost is $2, and all profits will be donated to the Red Cross.

Are you interested in becoming a doctor? A veterinarian? A hospital administrator? Whether your passion is medical practice, public health, leadership, or any other aspect of human or animal health care, there should definitely be something of interest to you in the 56 competitive events that HOSA offers. Join us atour introductory meeting on Tuesday, September 19th at 7 AM in room B219!

Attention All Seniors: You should have received an email to your school email address with your opportunity to vote for your 2017 Homecoming Court. Please vote as soon as possible as voting will close Thursday, September 14 at 7:00am. If you have any problems please come to the Athletic Department before Thursday morning. We should be able to announce the court by the end of the day on Thursday.

Mock Trial

Do you want to be an Attorney? Do you want to learn about the legal system? Well, if so, please come to an informational meeting about Mock Trial on Wednesday, September 20th, after school in the lower Hub. This meeting will last no more than an hour, and at that time, we will provide you with a brief overview of Mock Trial and how it works. All students are invited to participate! Additionally, on September 27th, there will be a short meeting after school to sign up for tryouts, which will take place on October 4th, from 5p-8p in the Hub. (You will only need to be there for your assigned time slot.) No need to stress, try outs are very relaxed, easy and most of all, fun!

Community Service

It's that time again, so get your costumes together and come out to be a narrator this year at the Farmpark, starting October 13th. They also need volunteers for the Fall Harvest starting Sept. 24. Need more info? Go to the Community Service Board located outside room D-100 and pick up a flyer. Looking forward to seeing you soon at Lake Farmpark.

International Explorers

ITALY!!! Any student interested in traveling to Italy for a once in a lifetime experience with Mentor High Schools World Travelers Club, we will be having a brief parent meeting on Thursday, September 14th from 6-6:30 in Paradigm 1. If you are unable to make the meeting, please contact Mrs. Ambrus OR Mrs. Toot in room D104. We will be traveling June 4th-13th, 2018.

Attention all Seniors: Beginning Tuesday, September 5th nominations will be accepted for the 2017 Mentor High School Homecoming Court. Nominations will be accepted in the athletic department office from Tuesday through Friday, September 8. Be prepared to present ID. Each senior will be able to nominate one person for Queen and one person for King whom they feel would best represent Mentor High School and the community. On September 11 the seniors will begin voting their top three choices for each of Queen and King. Voting will end Thursday, September 14 at noon and the candidates will be announced at the end of the day. The queen will be crowned at the homecoming game on September 29th just prior to the start of the game. The King will be crowned at the Homecoming assembly.

ATTENTION CCP STUDENTS: Academic advisors from Lakeland Community College will come to MHS to register students for the spring semester on the following dates: October 16th, October 18th, October 31st, and November 2nd. Advisors will be located in the Upper HUB and students may register during any free mod. Bring your CCP Registration Authorization Form that was mailed home to you. Wednesday, October 11 is a testing day at Mentor High School. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students will take the PSAT. We will not run a regular Wednesday late start schedule. Students should be in the building by 7:15 am and testing will begin right at 7:30 am. Testing should conclude between 11:15 - 11:45 am and you will be dismissed for the remainder of the day at that point. Our regular afternoon busing schedule will occur and afternoon bus transportation will leave Mentor High School at the normal time of 2:26 pm. Students will be allowed to stay in the student center if you need to ride the bus home. Our normal lunch program will be available to students.

Members of the senior class are encouraged to pursue college visits and/or job shadowing during the school day. Twelfth graders do not report to school on Wednesday. Students -- your test location currently appears on your class schedule in Infinite Campus. Make sure you know your testing location before Wednesday. On test day youll need to bring #2 pencils with an eraser as well as a calculator. No electronic devices other than calculators are allowed in testing rooms. Students taking the ASVAB test should report directly to the Fine Arts Center by 7:15 am. Testing will begin promptly at 7:30 am. Attendance will be taken for both the PSAT and the ASVAB.

Holden Arboretum is still recruiting a few friendly spirits (age 14 and up) to help staff our trick-or-treat trail, assist with crafts and activities and help guest services with parking and admissions at our annual not-too-spooky family Halloween extravaganza. All volunteers enjoy complimentary refreshments, the opportunity to check out the event before/after their shift and plenty of fun interacting with all the little goblins. This is a fun and creative way for teens age 14 and up to get service hours! Scout troops and student groups welcome. Big Brothers Big Sisters will be conducting interviews today(Tuesday) for student mentors. Many applications have been distributed the past couple of weeks but few have been returned. Anyone still wanting to participate, even if the application has not yet been completed and submitted, must come to unit 9 this morning and sign up for a time slot to interview. Students who have already submitted their applications already have a time slot for the interview assigned and will receive a pass to come to the interview today. LEAF is hosting Admissions Reps from Case, Hiram, Univ of Akron and Lakeland Thursday 9/21 at 6:30pm. The session will be held at the newly relocated office of LEAF which is at Lakeland Community College. The session will be in Room A-2101. This session will address all college admissions questions including common mistakes made on applications. Students who are interested in attending one of the U.S. Military Academies are invited to attend theMilitary Academy Information Day meeting on Sept. 16 at Auburn Career Center. Meeting will begin at 9:30. Representatives from all the Academies will give a brief presentation about their academy and be available for questions afterwards. Want to learn more about manufacturing? The Think Manufacturing Career Expo will be on October 5th, 2017 from 10:30 AM-1:00 PM at Wickliffe High School. The Expo will give students the opportunity to learn more about the various high tech careers, competitive pay, employment opportunities and other benefits manufacturing offers. Interested students should pick up a Field Trip Form from their Unit Office or CTE Office.

On September 19th, we are having a 'Rally for Ruhe' volleyball game to support Kris Ruhe and her fight against Adrenal Gland Cancer. Freshman/JV game @ 5:00 p.m. and Varsity at 6:30 p.m. T-shirt's can be purchased during lunch mods for $10. Wear your t-shirt to the game and you get in FREE! All of the money raised that night through t-shirt sales, Chinese auction, or 50/50 will be given to the Ruhe family.

The Girls and Boys Soccer teams will be hosting Kick for the Cure events Saturday, September 9th, 1 & 3 pm girls vs Notre Dame Cathedral Latin and September 16th 3, 5 & 7pm boys vs Lake Catholic High School. Kick for the Cure t-shirts are being sold for $10 during lunch mods. Wear your t-shirt to the game and receive free admission to both the girls and the boys Kick for the Cure Games. So, purchase your t-shirt and come to the game to support our team and our cause!

All senior students who have not met the End of Year testing requirements to graduate will be expected to attend a meeting beginning mod 3 in the Fine Arts Center on Wednesday, September 13. Notes will be sent, but check with your counselor if you have questions.

Students interested in attending one of the US Military Academies are invited to a meeting on Sept. 16 at 9:30am at Auburn Career Center. All aspects of admissions and life at a military academy will be discussed. Stop by Guidance, A114 for more info Representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy will give a brief representation about their academy and will be available for questions after the presentation. CSU will be hosting an event for females in grades 9-12 interested in learning more about engineering on Sept. 23 from 9-1. Students who are looking for employment should periodically check out the Job Board located on the wall outside the old book store. Jobs are continually being posted.

 

The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization is recruiting volunteers for their after school programs at Brentmoor and Garfield Elementary schools. High school volunteers are matched with a child to create a mentor-mentee friendship. Volunteers who choose to participate must commit an entire academic year of service. All activities are conducted under the supervision of a BBBS coordinator. Applications can be picked up and dropped off in the Unit 9 Office. Completed applications are due September 15th.
