Science Olympiad
Congratulations to the Science Olympiad team that won what happens to be the heaviest trophy in school history. It is a work of art carved in Pennsylvania bluestone. Solid stone! The team finished 2nd at the Jan 14 Athens Pa invitational competing against some of the top 10 schools in the country. Go Cards!

Yay! Mentor earned the 3rd place trophy at the Northmont Invitational this past weekend. 45 teams from 4 states participated in this regional. Next weekend the team goes to Athens PA to compete against some of the top Nationals teams from NY and PA.

Student Government
Student Government will be holding a clothing drive from January 9-13! Any coats collected will go to Coats for Kids and the rest will go to the Salvation Army. Collection bins will be clearly labeled and placed around the school.

Sophomores: Applications for 2012-2013 Leadership Lake County are available. LLC students meet monthly with juniors from Lake Co. learning about the history, government and economic/business devopment of Lake. Co. Aopplications in Guidance A113. The LLC group meets once a month during the school day at various locations. See the application for the scheduled events. Student apply for LLC as sophomores and participate their junior year.

Seniors: The Plain Dealer will be publishing their "Senior Standouts" section in May. MHS may nominate one senior for theis honor. If you would like to considered, pick up an application in Guidance A113. Deadline to apply is Feb. 10. They are looking for well-rounded seniors whose efforts have made them exemplary. Excellence in academics, school activities and involvement in community activities is the baseline. The MHS nominee will be chosen from those who apply.

The Joyce Ivy Foundation is providing scholarships for women to attend a summer scholars program. Candidates must be females who have the potential to attend an Ivy League or equivalent institution. Sophs & Jrs: Applications are availabe for LAB (Learning About Business) the week-long seminar held in June at Lake Erie College. Develop your leadership skills and business strategies and meet students from all over Lake Co. Info in Guidance A113. During LAB week students, will live on campus and network with top area business professionals. Students will form teams and compete for awards. LAB will provide students with life and career strategies no matter what vocation chosen.

The 37th annual Vking swim invitational was held on Saturday at CSU where 65 swim teams were represented. The Mentor team sent the following swimmers: Emily Clinton, Maria Coy, Stephen Cox, Rhiannon Herbert, Nathan Kopan, Cassie Kremyar, Griffin Lau, Alex Lingafelter, Jessie Lipstreuer, Alec Rovniak, Emilee Sebestyen, Emily Warnock, and Rachel Winslow. Top ten times made it to the championship finals and the next ten times made it to the consolation finals, with 21st and 22nd place finishes named as 1st and 2nd alternates to the finals. Those finishing in the finals: 200 medley girls relay: 3rd-consolation final-Maria Coy, Rhiannon Herbert, Jessie Lipstreuer, Emily Clinton-1:58.04 200 medley boys relay: 2nd alternate-Stephen Cox, Griffin Lau, Alex Lingafelter, Alec Rovniak-1:51.58 200 IM: 5th-championship final-Coy-2:10.94. (Maria was only one hundreth of a second from a new school record on this event!) 500 freestyle: 2nd alternate-Herbert-5:47.08 200 freestyle relay-girls 7th-consolation final-Coy, Herbert, Clinton, Lipstreuer-1:46.53 100 breaststroke: 2nd-championship final-Maria Coy broke her existing school record with a 1:06.93! 10th-consolation final-Herbert-1:13.93 Congratulations swimmers!
